6ixtynin9, Another Thai Movie Review

"6ixtynin9" is the English title or "Ruang Talok 69" which is the original Thai title meaning "funny story six nine".

Neflix's summary sounded intriguing enough: "Soon after losing her job, a young, beautiful Thai woman named Tum finds a noodle box [David, it's Mama's minced-pork flavor] stuffed full of money on her doorstep and decides to keep the loot … but not without dire consequences. Tum soon finds herself in the center of a bewildering, comical, high-stakes caper that involves Thai boxing gangsters, corrupt businessmen and incompetent police. Can she outwit them all and still be in the money?"

The actress, Lalita Panyopas, is pretty and has good acting ability. The plot is easy to follow. It is kinda "comical" but I never find myself laughing. Tum's boss has to lay off three ladies and instead of choosing the ladies himself he has them all pick a number. "Let fate decide." Tum's unlucky from the beginning when she picks the losing number 9. She gets laid off from her secretarial position, finds herself completely broke and contemplating suicide. BUT, she hears a knock at the door.

That's when she finds the Mama's minced-pork flavored noodle box full of hundreds of 500 baht notes. Cha-Ching! Maybe she isn't so unlucky after all.

The money comes from a couple of thugs trying to fix a Thai boxing fight. Tum's room number is 6 but the number on the door is missing a nail and it falls to a 9 whenever she closes the door. (I'm beginning to see a connection with the number 9!)This is where the mishap occurs. The gangsters directions were to place the money in front of room 9. Wrong room 9! Kinda funny, right?

Anyway, the gangsters realize their mistake. Bada-boom-bada-bing, one thing leads to another and now Tum has a couple of dead guys on her hands. And from here on out Tum's trying to figure out how to get the hell out. But she needs a passport. It seems she has too much to do.

There are several gory scenes of her cleaning up spilled blood, stuffing bodies into basket-like boxes and sawing off a police man's leg since she can't get it into the box. But it is somewhat funny because of the circumstances she finds herself in. How many people do you have to kill and stuff into a box to get your ass out of the country? Hopefully, with the money! Not that a million baht could get her very far anywhere else in the world! :) But it is just a movie and I found it quite entertaining. 4stars.

I heard that "Syndromes and a Century" is the best Thai film on everyone's short list.
